The 2011 vintage will be remembered for near perfect weather conditions. Warm, sunny days and cool, rainless nights characterised the ripening season. This allowed for slow, even ripening and optimal flavour development with no disease pressure.
Parcels of fruit were harvested from individually selected blocks in our Mount Barker vineyards. A mixture of clean and turbid juice was racked into a selection of new and aged oak from several separate cooperages for barrel fermentation. The barrels were monitored over the cool, 12 day fermentation to preserve delicate fruit flavours. The finished wine was left in barrel and stirred regularly for approximately 9 months on the fermentation lees to develop a more textural mouthfeel. The individual barrels were tasted prior to blending and only those that fitted the ‘Styx Gully’ style were selected.
: Mid to deep straw with a pale green hue.
: A combination of nougat, white peach and lemon zest with subtle
flint characters on the nose. Great activity with well integrated oak.
Medium palate weight with subtle oak influence. Stone fruit flavours and hints of citrus are complemented by a textural quality developed through lees stirring. The wine finishes with a persistence of flavour.
Wonderfully drinking now, or cellaring for up to 5 years.
This Chardonnay represents the old world becoming new again, stone fruit characters offset with french oak barrel ferment and a seamless integration of extended lees contact. This is a stunning textural wine showing balance and persistence.
